Giving FAQ
The annual fund
Why does the school have an Annual Fund?
As a nonprofit, Step One depends on philanthropy to sustain its financial health and long-term future. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of delivering an exceptional early childhood education while also investing in our teachers, facilities, and programs. Like most schools, we maintain an Annual Fund to bring our community together in support of the school’s mission and values. The Annual Fund ensures that Step One can remain strong, vibrant, and accessible—not just for today’s children, but for generations to come.
Why does the Annual Fund go toward Financial Aid?
Step One maintains a robust and carefully managed operating budget that covers the school’s day-to-day needs— salaries, classroom resources, staff professional development, and campus upkeep. Financial Aid is budgeted separately, with the school committing approximately $100,000 each year, and the Annual Fund is designated to provide $70,000 of that amount.
The school has intentionally chosen to direct every Annual Fund gift to Financial Aid because expanding access and supporting economic diversity are central to our mission. This focus strengthens our community and enables more families to share in the Step One experience.
Why doesn’t Step One just increase tuition?
Raising tuition higher would likely result in the loss of a number of students whose families cannot afford the increase. A drop in enrollment would lead to a less economically diverse community. Currently, through our annual fund campaign and operating funds, we raise enough money to assist 12-15% of our school families, with financial aid up to 50% of their tuition. In addition, 4-5 families per year receive an additional 50% of financial aid through the Changemaker Fund covering their full tuition.
Why is 100% participation so important?
We ask every member of the Step One community to make a donation to the Annual Fund. 100% participation is a vote of confidence - a sign that our internal community is committed to our mission and program. In addition, high Annual Fund participation is a benchmark used by outside funders to measure community support and parent approval.
How do I know how much to give?
We understand that every family’s capacity to give is different, and each year we are grateful to receive gifts of all sizes—from $10 to $5,000. What matters most is participation! Every contribution, no matter the amount, strengthens our community, reflects your commitment, and helps make a difference. We encourage you to give at a level that feels meaningful for your family, knowing that every donation supports Step One’s mission.
When else will I/We be asked to donate?
Beyond the school’s Annual Fund, room parents ask for donations for teacher giving twice a year—before winter recess and at the end of summer. Contributions, in any amount, are pooled and divided equally among all teachers, including afternoon teachers, as a collective thank-you.
Does the school run other fundraising campaigns beyond the Annual Fund?
Yes, about every five to ten years, the school may launch a special campaign to support long-term growth and major projects that strengthen our community, such as upgrading facilities or building an endowment for the future. These campaigns are time-limited, focused on specific goals, and designed to ensure the school continues to thrive for generations to come.
Do I have to make my gift now, or can I make payments on a pledged gift?

Can I set up a recurring gift?
